One of the hardest lessons in international politics is this: that defence lines cannot he drawn on static geographical points; that they rest ui ideas and ideals shared by great peoples, and that one people’s defence must always he based in part on the strength of other peoples whose sense of values and morals is similar says the “Christian Science Monitor.” This fact is behind the conversations going on between United States and British representatives. These conversations look to increased co-operation among the English-speaking sections of the world. Specifically, they have dealt with the possibility of Americans using British bases in South Africa, Australia and New Zealand, and in the Far East. Should such an arrangement be concluded, the United States’ ability to defend its interests in China and South-eastern and Oceanic Asia would be greatly increased.
