ASHBURTON REMIT.
THE ACCLIMATISATION SOCIETY.
SUPPORT FROM WESTLAND Advice that the Westland Acclimatisation Society would support its remit to the annual conference of South Island Societies to be held at Christchurch to-morrow was received by the Council of the Ashburton Sbciety at its meeting last evening. The remit asks for direct representation by all societies at all the annual and general meetings of the South Island Societies. A copy of the remits for the conference was received. The voting on the remits was left to the group delegate (Mr J. McDonald, of the South Canterbury Society). In the event of the secretary (Mr J. B. Nicoll) on active service, it was decided that Miss J. Milne act-as secretary.
The Ranger (Mr M. Orton) reported that the shag rookeries at the Rangitata, Ashburton and Rakaia Gorges had been visited and 72 full-grown birds 40 young birds and 24 eggs had been destroyed. It was resolved trf ask the South and North Canterbury Societies to pay half the cost of the visits to the Rangitata and Rakaia Gorges respectively. The ranger also reported that two men had been caught fishing at the Rakaia River without licences and were to he prosecuted.
