Indications of difficulties regarding' food , came from several quarters today. ‘
The Minister for Food (Baron Woolton), in a speech appealed to the public to be careful in using milk during the next two months, although rationing was not proposed. An official order prohibits the use of liquid milk, including skimmed milk, in the manufacture of ice-cream, from next' Sunday. The Minister for Agriculture (Mr R. S. Hudson) in the House of Commons said that a further increase in the home production of food was vital, particularly edible crops and milk. Lord Woolton also pointed out that the shortage of sweets, was due to the restriction of sugar available for the manufacture ,of these. A scarcity of slab chocolate was due to members of the auxiliary fire services and canteen workers receiving priority.
The Colonial Office informed the country’s largest importers of bananas that no more licences would be granted for the importation of bananas into Britain. ' • " ' *
