THE LOWCLIFFE MEETING
The monthly meeting of the LowclifFe Women’s Institute was held recently, Mr s Eted'decliffe presiding over a good attendance. Members stood in silence as a mark of respect for the late Dr. G. I. Miller.
The motto, “Don’t dodge difficulties, meet them, greet them, beat them, ’ was given by Mrs Pearce. The Golden Thread was given by Mrs McKenzie, Who gave an interesting talk on the early days of her parents. Donations of £1 to thev Health Camp, and of the value of one dozen eggs per member to the orphanage were agreed to
Several members offered to take soldiers’ children for the Christmas holidays. It was decided to hold a flower show', flie final arrangements to be made at the next meeting. The roll call, “What I had for lunch,” caused much amusement. There were large entries in the competitions, .the results being:—Gingernuts (afterwards packed to be sent to local soldiers overseas), Mrs Smyth 1, Miss L. Reddecliffe Mrs D. Mcßae 3; soft toys (to be forwarded! to the Ashburton Public Hospital), Miss Tait 1, Misses McKie and L. Reddecliffe (equal) 2, Mesdames R. E. Cross and Pearce (equal) 3; irag doll, Mrs McKenzie 1, Mesdames Clarke and Murdoch (equal) 2, Miss Armstrong 4; spike, Mrs W. Clarke 1, Mesdames Hawke and Pearce (equal) 2: cluster, Miss Tait and'Mrs Pearce (equal) 1; bloom, Mesdames W. Clarke and! R. Hawke and Miss Hawkins (equal) 1. The social half-hour .competitions were w r on by Mrs Mcßae and Miss Dutton.
Afternoon tea was handed round by tlie hostesses, Mrs Han? and Misses A. and E. Dutton.
