LOOKING RACK.

FIFTY YEARS SYNE. (From the “Guardian/’ Nov. 25, 1890) The Police—Sergeant Holier, who fer the last 10 years lias baen stationed at Hokitika, has been appointed to the charge of the Ashburton Police District. and will entejr upon his duties at once. Previous to leaving Hokitika last week, he was publicly presented with * a purse of sovereigns and .an address, the latter to be engrossed and sent after him to Ashburton, We quote from the text of the additsss the 'following opinion of the i&ergeant held by the people of Hokitika;—.“You have proved yourself a most zealous, intelligent and conscientious officer. At the same time you have invariably tempered ycair strict sense of duty to your department, .with such a humane and wise method of administration as to call forth the highest feelings of admiration on our part. As a private citizen your conduct and influence for good have been much as to merit the esteem and respect of all classes of the community. We trust that the change you are about to make may he a stepping-stone to' that higher promotion which you so justly merit.”

TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO. (From the “Guardian,” Nov. 25, 1915) Big Picnic —The annual excursion to Timaru of the Hampstead School was held to-day. Probably the largest number of people that has ever taken part in the excursions since they wtere inaugurated gathered on the station platform this morning. It- took If), carriages to held the children and their parents, there being probably 800 persons altogether. A party of children from the Hinds School were picked up eti route. Several outside picnic parties joined the excursion) including a team of croquet players and a team of bowlers from the Ashburton clubs. The, weather was favourable, although the strong westerly wind, which blew all day would probably mar to a small extent the pleasure of the outing.

Motor-vehicles —Some idea, of the, increasing demand for motor-cars can be gathered from the fact that from November, 1913, to November, 1914, , 124 were registered in tho Ashburton County, and 1 from Novefnber, 1914, to November, 1915, 245 were ."registered.
