WOMEN’S INSTITUTE.
THE ASHBURTON MEETING. The Ashburton Women’s Institute met yesterday afternoon, the president (Mrs G. M. Breeze) presiding. The president read a letter from Sister Lucas, who is with the military forces in Egypt. Mrs Rowlatt, of Christchurch, gave an interesting talk on Africa.
It was announced that the annual picnic would be held in January at Mrs Bird’s residence, AVinchmore. Competitions resulted as follows: Jam sponge roll: Mrs Clark i, 'Mrs Baker 2. Roses: Mrs Hayston 1, Mrs Bland 2, Mrs Hillier 3. Ginger-bread: Mrs Mclnnes 1, Mrs Bland and Mrs Baker (equal) 2. Bloom: Mrs Hayston 1, Mrs Bland 2,' Mrs Hillier 3. Truss: Mrs Stoddart 1, Mrs Bland 2. The hostesses were Mesdames Baker, McLean, Hayston, Corbett and Paston.
