PATRIOTIC WORK.
COMMITTEE FOR MOUNT HUTT. REORGANISATION OF BODY. There was a fair attendance of residents of the Mount Hutt district at a meeting held at Metlivon for the purpose of considering the appointment of si patriotic committee for the district. Mr James Carr was voted to the chair and lie explained that some dissatisfaction seemed to be apparent regarding the formation of the committee which has been acting during the past year. He explained that the committee had been originally appointed in connection with the arrangingof socials to soldiers going on active service. Later when it became necessary to form a committee to take charge of the raising of money for the patriotic fund the members of the send-off committco were appointed. The meeting which appointed them had not been publicly advertised and they were probably at fault there but as the members were representative of every local and sports body it was as good a committee as it was possible to get.
Mr R, G. Gerard said that the meeting should have been publicly advertised and the poor response to the appeal for funds, lie thought, showed there was some dissatisfaction with the committee.
Mr Oarr objected to this statement as it had boon found throughout the County that unless a personal appeal was made the appeal was not successful.
Mr Dart said there was no doubt they had done something which they ;tere not entitled to do. He thought the best thing to do was to go out of office and to form a new committee. He moved in that direction. Tho. motion was carried.
It was agreed that the committee be unlimited and that those elected have power to add to their number. All present were appointed to the committee." Mr Carr was appointed chairman, Mr J. F. Stone secretary and fMr R. F. Ronai hon. treasurer. The new committee approved the action of tho old committee in sending out the circular asking for donations to the £1,000,000 patriotic fund. The secretary announced that the amount received to date was £l-14. It was decided to include on the committee all members of the old committee. It was also agreed to meet on the first Monday in each month in the Road Board Office.
Mr' Rawlinson referred to tho good work of the committee that had acted in the past and he moved that a vote of thanks be'passed to them. This was seconded by ? Mr Stanley Wilson, who stated that the socials for the soldiers had been most efficiently organised. The motion was carried unanimously.
