Ashburton Guardian Magna est Veritas et Prævalebit FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 1, 1940. THE NEW ORDER.
As with most moves made by Hitler the agreement for collaboration with France in the so-called new order in Europe is hidden in the obscurity of a fog emitted by the German leader himself, who, from the evidence that authoritative circles in Berlin are themselves annoyed at the paucity of news on the subject, apparently dares not trust even his own officials. Laval has made several attempts to ingratiate himself with the Nazis and lately has come to terms with Hitler for the carving lip of his own country, with most of her colonies destined (under the new order plan) to be added to the territories of Germany, Italy and Spain, Petain, on the other hand, has proved according to messages from Vichy, to be an unexpected stumbling block to Laval’s plottings and is said to be holding out firmly against the handing oyer to the Axis of French bases from which the British could more easily be attacked in the Atlantic and in the Mediterranean. He is also opposing the handing over of the French fleet for use against the British, which would be the last word in perfidy on the part of a former ally which in the first place allowed itself to become rotten with Nazi intrigue and then capitulated without first consulting Britain, with whom she had a pact not to sue foi separate peace without first consulting Britain. An American correspondent in Europe has stated that something appears to have gone wrong with Hitler’s plans on the Continent. With his hands full in the suppression of several countries which are far from being docile under his regime, it is no wonder that the arch plotter’s schemes are go ing awry. The day will assuredly come when these countries will rise as one against the aggressors, and that day will be when the British, havi lg mastered the air blitzkrieg and further immobilised the German under-water craft, launch a land attack on the Continent.
