GRAIN AND PRODUCE. THE ASHBURTON MARKET. Ashburton grain, seed and produce merchants report that there has been a strong demand for Italian ryegrass of high germination, hut supplies are now in short compass. There has also been a better demand for lines of certified ryegrass. Red and white clover of export quality is also in demand.

There has been a better demand for cocksfoot, following the North Island inquiry.

Partridge peas for seed purposes are going out in limited quanitiies. Other markets show no change.

The following aro prices quoted to farmers, on trucks at country stations unless otherwise indicated, sacks extra, free of commission:—

Wheat Milling, f.0.b., Tuscan 5s lid, Hunters 6s Id, Pearl 6s 3d, Marquis 6s sd. (Final payment of 3d a bushel on all wheat at end of year.) Oats A Gartons 3s 9d to 4s, B Gartons 3s 6d, Algerian 3s 9d to 4s, Duns, dark heavy, 4s 3d to 4s 9d. Partridge Peas—6s 9d to 7s a bushel. No. 1 grade. Ryegrass—Perennial 6s 6d to 7s, Italian 7s to Bs. Cocksfoot—Bd to 9d.

White Clover—ls 9d to 2s 6d. Red Clover—ls to Is 4d. Chaff—£s. Potatoes—Prompt delivery, £1 10s

The Egg Market. Prices on the egg market remain unchanged—buying at Is Id and selling at Is 3d per dozen. There is a, good supply. THE STOCK MARKETS. I ADDTNGTON. CHRISTCHURCH, October 16. There was a general increase in entries at the Addington market. Fat sheep were in over-supply, and as a result there was a sharp decline in prices. Store sheep sold briskly and fat cattle eased in l-alue because of the big supply. There was an entry of 2500 store sheep, mostly ewes and lambs and .ewe hoggets, including some outstanding strong woolled lines. There was a slight easing in values. Good lialfbred ewe hoggets made 29s 6d, others 28s 9d, medium lines 255, wether hoggets 235. 4d, ewes and lambs 18s. . Spring lambs numbered 240. Prime lines sold at 12d per lb, and others at 8d to 9d.

Buying for the West Coast made a strong market for fat sheep. The entry of 600 was made up of mostly ewes, and the market was easier. Prime wethers made 47s to 51s 7d, good 40s to 465, others from 345; best ewes 38s to 44s 4d, medium 27s 6d to 375. There was a good showing of medium weights in the 422 fat cattle forward. Heavy steers dropped 20s and other classes 10s. Good beef made 51s to 54s per 1001 b and medium 455; best steers £l7 to £23, medium from £l3; extra prime heifers £l7 2s 6d, good £l3 to £ls, light from £lO, good cows £lO to £l6.

In the store cattle section there was the best penning of the season for both breeding and condition. A small pen of five 3-year Shorthorns, in fair store condition, made the exceedingly good price of £l2 11s, and a larger pen of 10, bred the same way and scarcely so forward, £ll 16s. The Black Polls and Herefords were all two-year-olds, and except for one pen of smaller sorts were in good store condition. A pen of 11 Black Polls sold at £lO 6s, and 38 at prices ranging from £7 18s 6d to £9 16s. Other sales included a pen of averaged-conditioned 2-year Shorthorn steers, which made £8 18s 6d, and a pen of seven lied Poll cows £6 6s. A pen of eight Shorthorn heifers made £7 6s, and there was a keen demand for store cows for grazing.

Porkers sold at 6jd to 8d per lb, and bacon 6£d to 7d. The entry in the store pig section was very small, comprising l many weaners and slips. Small and plain weaners 20s to 245, medium 25s to 2Ss, best to 335; slips 35s to 38s, small stores 38s to 425, medium 43s to 48s, large to 525. Sales of County Clients.

BURNSIDE. DUNEDIN, October 16. For the Burnside stock sale to-day large yarding of 328 head of fat cattle were in shorter supply, the bulk of the entry being made up of prime me-dium-weights, with a large proportion of light and unfinished cows and heifers. Prices for extra prime heavy cattle remained firm, but with the assistance of several outside orders, prime lilt'dium-weigtits showed increases of from 10s to 15s a head, while light and unfinished cattle sold firm on last week’s rates. Extra prime heavy bullocks made to £25 7s 6d, prime heavy £2O 12s 6d to £22 17s 6d; prime medium bullocks £l6 12s 6d to £lB 12s 6d, and light from £l2 2s 6d to £ls 12s 6d; extra prime heavy cows and heifers to £2l, prime heavy £l4 7s 6d to £l6 2s 6d, prime medium £ll 12s 6d to £l3 2s 6d, and light from £9 2s 6d. Only 50 head of store cattle were yarded. With the exception of one pen of yearling steers, which failed to find a buyer at auction, the entry was made up of cows and heifers. Prices showed no change on rates ruling last week. Fewer than 30 dairy cows were offered. The yarding' generally was made up of poorer quality sorts, which met with a dragging sale. Up to £9 was obtained for the best elose-to-profit sort penned. An entry of 1985 sheep came forward. Ewes were in the majority. Some excellent consignments were noticeable. The sale commenced with values Is lower, but through lack of outside competition lower rates had to be accepted over the latter part of the market. Prices generally may be. quoted at 2s to 3s easier for all classes. Prime woolly wethers made 43s to 40s 6d, light and unfinished wethers from 32s 6d, extra heavy shorn wethers to 395, prime 33s to 375; extra heavy young woolly ewes to 45s 9d, medium 30s to 335, light 24s to 28s 6d; prime shorn ewes 27s 6d, and medium 245.

A slightly larger entry of 57 fat lambs came forward. Competition was fairly well maintained, although prices were lower by 2s to 3s compared with recent high rates. A medium yarding of 142 head of fat pigs was penned. Porkers and baconers made up the entry in equal proportions, prices for the former showing an increase of 5s a head on last, week’s rates, while baconers also sold at an advance of 3s a head. Store pigs had an entry of 74", showing an advance of 4s to 5s on those ruling last week.
