MID-CANTERBURY ASSOCIATION. PREPARATION FOR NEW SEASON Although', it might be necessary to considerably curtail activities this year the game would liav/e to be continued, said the president of the Mid-Canter-bury Lawn Tennis Sub-Association (Mr G. C. Niooll) moving the adoption of the annual report and balance-sheet (published yesterday) at the annual meeting last evening. He congratulated the representative team on its meritorious win in the Brdwning Shield competitioni. The finances were in a satisfactory state, he commented. The election of officers resulted: — President, Mr G. C. Nicoll; vice-presi-dents, Messrs J. W. M. Dart, L. R. Clarke, -S. IP. Taylor, P. Sheehan, W.
McKeague, F. W. Seldon, C. A. S. Watson and R. J. Low; secretary and treasurer, Mr K. G. Fowke • assistantsecretary, Mr W. T. Corbett; match committee, Messrs W. T. Corbett, V. W. R-ussell, E. P. Bryant, and A. M. Fergus (chairman and convener); delegates to Canterbury Association, Messrs G. C. Nicoll and L. R. Clarke; auditor, Mr C. H. Hardy. Matches in Christchurch. The usual town and country games would be played at Wilding Park on Saturday, December 7, stated a letter from the Canterbury Lawn Tennis Association. Support was invited. A£ter discussion, in which some delegates maintained that players should be given an opportunity of taking part, it was recommended to the match committee that an endeavour lie made to send a senior team. Owing to petrol restrictions and other difficulties some doubts were expressed as to whether competitions could be conducted. It was stated that if competition matches could not be played,, friendly matches should be kept going. It was left to the match committee to go into the question. The handicap tournaments were fixed for December 14 and 21. Representative matches were left in the hands ,o.f the match committee and delegates to the Canterbury Association. It was decided to l write to the Canterbury Lawn Tennis Association stating that if it was not possible to play set matches for the Browning Shield, the Mid-Canterbury Association was prepared to play challenge matches. THE RUAPUNA CLUB. Visitors from surrounding districts were present at the official opening of the Ruapuna Tennis Club for the 1940 season. The president (Mr G. Ross) declared the season open. A dance was held in the evening, music hieing supplied by Mr P. Taylor and partner, and ,Mr F. Allen acted as Master of Ceremonies.
