FIFTY YEARS SYNE » (From the “Guardian,” Oct. 17,"1890). Toole in Ashburton'—The greatest treat the plav-going public of this town and district have had or are likely to have for a long time was that afforded by the appearance at the Oddfellows’ Hall of Mr ,J. L. Toole and his talented company. Everybody knows that Toole is the first comedian of the day, but only a few have until Thursday had the opportunity of seeing and. hearing him, and laughing at him arid with him. And (everybody did laugh, and laugh consumedlv for he is absolutely irresistible.

TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO. (From the! “Guardian,” Oct. 17, 1915). Press Dinner —On Saturday eveninp; last a complimentary dinner was tendered by the Directors of tine Ashburton Mail and Guardian Co. Ltd., to the staff of the company. M|r Robert Bell (chairman of directors) presided over the gathering, and Mr It. B. Bell occupied the- vicr-cbair. Apologies for absence were received from Miss McCormick and Mr W. B. W. Bell. There were also present the firm’s banker (Mir W. H. Limn), the auditor (Mr F. ,W. Watt), and Mr E. J. Paul, the Ashburton representative of the Christchurch “Press.” The function took place at tills Commercial Hotel, and the excellent repast provided by 'Host and Hostess Young was done full justice to.
