MAIN HIGHWAYS.
ROADS IN ASHBURTON COUNTY. A list of roads which cease to be be main highways, and others which become main highways, is contained in the last issue of the New Zealand Gazette.
Those roads in the County which cease to be main highways are: Ashburton - Methven, Mdthvon to its junction with the Sheffield - Arundel road via Upper Rakaia Gorge Bridge, Sheffield - Arundel road via Upper Rakaia Gorge Bridge, Methven - Alford Forest, Rakaia. - Methven, Tinwakl - Mayfield, Mayfield - Valetta, River Road, Rakaia - Methven via Barrhill, Mayfield - Westerfield, Tinwakl - Mayfield via Westerfield.
New main highways are: AshburtonRakaia Gorge (from north-west of the Borough to the junction with the Darfield - Arundel main highway, distance, 26 miles 48 chains), Darfield - Arundel (from northern boundary of County to its junction with the Hinds-Winchester via Arundel main highway near Arundel, distance of 41 miles 16 chains), Rakaia - Methven - Alford Forest (from junction with Christchurcs-Tim-aru main mighway at Rakaia to junction with Darfield-Aru ndel main Highway near Pudding Hill, distance of 28 miles 72 chains), Tinwald - Mayfield - Valetta (from junction with Christ-church-Timaru' main highway at Tinwald to a point opposite the Valetta railway station, distance 23 miles 72 chains), Rakaia-Methven via Barrhill (from junction with Christchurch-Tim-aru main highway at Rakaia to the junction with Rakaia - Methven - Alford Forest main highway at Methven, distance of 23 miles 28 chains), Tinwald - Mayfield via Westerfield (from junction with Christchurch - Timaru main highway at Timvald to junction with Timvald-Mayfield-V aletta main highway near Mayfield, distance of 17 miles 60 chains).
