THE TERRITORIALS

SECOND BALLOT LIKELY.

BARELY HALF OF MEN PASS TESTS.

(Per Press Association)

CHRISTCHURCH, This Day

The likelihood of a second ballot for the conscription of Territorials is indicated by returns from the- examination of men called up in the first- ballot.

Of 546 men examined in Area. 10 (Christchurch, Ashburton, and Timaru) last week, only 292 were classed as fit for all branches of service. The remainder included 185 fit for home service, 29 temporarily unfit, and 40 permanently unfit. Reserved occupations necessitate further rejections. About 750 men are required and it is expected that the first postings will be made this week. Move orders will be effective on October 23, when. 68 men will lie sent to tho artillery camp at AVingntui, 64 to tho 3rd Field Company, New Zealand Engineers, at Buimhnm, and 58 to- the Signals Company. Four men, preferably pipers, are needed in the Scottish detachment. On October 28, 25 men will - join the 3rd Field Ambulance at Burnham. Postings to the Army Service Corps numbering 327, will be mad'e in January and ISO will join the Canterbury Yeomanry Cavalry to bring the unit up to establishment to enter camp in February. * Inquiries in official circles yesterday indicated that a second ballot would be necessary to fill requirements.
