FIFTY YEARS SYNE (From the, “Guardian,” Oct. 1, -1890). Electoral Polls—The main Ashburton roll has 2724 namj?s upon it, and it is expected that when the supplementary roll is closed! there will be at least another 500 names to be dealt with. Persons whose names are not yet- registered ought to lose no time in letting the Registrar (Sir Joseph Ward) know of existence. The main roll requires a good deal of v purging, as there are names thereon of persons who have left the district years ago.

- The Elections—Parliament will lie further prorogued to October* 4. In the interval a Gazette will he- issued dissolving it, and calling the new Parliament together on December 18.. The date of the elections seems to recede fnirther every dav v Now' it is stated there is a; probability of the date being put off till the beginning of (December. Members who have boon consulted all want different dates, and the Ministers themselves are not entirely agreed on the point.

TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO. (From the “Guardian,” Oct. 1, 1915). Germans Annihilated—Petrograd: The Fifth Infantry Regiment suddenly attacked the Russian positions in the Eckau district, and, despite murderous machine-gun fire the enemy advanced rapidly. The Russians throe armoured motors, against which the German bullets were powerless. The regiment was practically annihilated. Appeal to the Young—-The following pithy extract from a Canterbury lad “doing his bit” on Gallipoli Peninsula probably indicates what most of the boys in the trenches think of their mates in New Zealand who are deaf to the call to participate in the- greatest game:—“l note that; —still does the backsliding trick. I cannot understand how any young fellow, fit and without any ties, does not come forward. He must have a tough time, as I understand the shirkers get a rough handling from the Press and other sources.”
