GIFT AEROPLANES.

ASHBURTON'S CONTRIBUTION. FUND CLOSE'S ON MONDAY. The tribute paid by his Majesty the King to the Air Force, “\\'hose exploits are the Avonder of the Avorld,” is one that Avill be heartily echoed throughout the Empire. The great range and daring of the air attack, as well as the skill and stubbornness of the defence, are illustrated in every day’s neAVS. It is e\ T ident now that the bombing raids so carefully organised and courageously carried out have had Aveighty effect on the Nazi Avar machine, and that the persistent attacks upon Hitler’s invasion bases and shipping concentrations haA r e disturbed invasion plans. From these successes the hitting power of the Royal Air Force will be built up more and more. Lord BeaA’erbroolc last Aveek called for a still greater effort in aircraft production. New Zealand cannot contribute to this directly, but it is possible, through the gilt of planes, to encourage those avlio are fighting and AA rorking in the front line. So far, Ashburton has not been very generous in its response, the fund here amounting to only £6l 9s 3d, a further donation of 5s Gd from “Scrap Metal” having been made in the last day or so. The fund is to be closed on Monday afternoon and it is hoped that ,the Ashburton contribution will bp more worthy than that already in hand. The total Avas increased by £1 by a donation made this afternoon, by “B. and R.N.”
