GRAIN AND PRODUCE.

THE ASHBURTON MARKET. Ashburton grain, seed and produce merchants report that there has been a stronger inquiry for all seeds this week. Owing to the approach of spring and the shortage of stocks in some lines, farmers are now booking up their requirements. The export inquiry for ryegrass and white clover has had a firming tendency on this market. All milling wheat is now all cleared up. Seed wheat is still going out in limited quantities. / Garton oats for seed purposes are saleable. Milling requirements are being met with supplies from Australia. Growers arc still awaiting an announcement from the Government' in connection with the marketing of potatoes. In the meantime the market is dull. From to-day the prices of all wheats increase by a halfpenny per bushel. All other prices remain unchanged. The following aro prices quoted to farmers, on trucks' at country stations unless otherwise indicated, sacks extra, free of commission:—

Wheat Milling, f.0.b., Tuscan os lid, Hunters 6s Id, Pearl 6s 3d, Marquis 6s sd. (Final payment of 3d a bushel on all wheat at end of year.)

Oat£ A Gartons 3s 9d to 4s, B Gartons 3s 6d, Algerian 3s 9d to 4s, Duns, dark heavy, 4s 3d to 4s 9d. Partridge Peas—6s 9d to 7s a bushel, No. 1 grade. Ryegrass—Perennial 6s 6d to 7s, Italian 7s to Bs.. Cocksfoot —8d to 9d. White Clover —Is 9d to 2s 6d. Red Clover —Is to Is 4d. Chaff—£6. , Potatoes—Prompt delivery £2. The Egg Market. There is now a big supply of eggs on the local market, and prices are definitely weaker. The buying and retail prices to-day were Is fid and Is 8d per dozen respectively. THE STOCK SALES. ADDINGTON. CHRISTCHURCH, July 31. Slightly larger entries and the maintenance of good quality led to a sound sale for all classes of fat stock at Addington to-day. Fat sheep showed another improvement, while the cattle market was also a shade firmer. There was a steadying in store sheep values. ‘ There was an an entry of 4000 fat sheep and keen buying in anticipation of holiday needs for National Week. Prices improved by about 2s a head. Prime heavy wethers sold at 42s to 465, with tops at 48s to 55s lOd, prime me-dium-weights 37s 6d to 41s, ordinary 31s to 365; best ewes 40s to 49s lOd, prime heavy 34s to 375, and good medium 28s 6d to 335.

The entry of store sheep was nearly double that of last week, comprising about 1600 head. The bulk were ewes, but the increased supply caused an easing of about 2s a head. There was again good quality in fat cattle, and a firm sale for a yarding of 500. Best beef made 46s to 48s per 1001 b, medium 43s and inferior from 37s 6d downwards. Prime steers sold at £l6 to £l7 15s, with tops at £23 7s 6d, medium weights £l4 to £ls 15s; best heifers £lB, vyith other good lines from £ll to £l3; prime cows mode to £lO 15s, with extra good pens at £ls 17s 6d; ordinary sorts solfl at £6 15s to £8 10s. • There was a very small entry in the store section, which included several pens of steers in forward store condition; three-year-okl Hereford steers sold at £ll Is and £9 6s; bulls made to £ll 18s 6d for the best, others from £6 10s to £9. Porkers were again in short supply, and there was a further firming. Choppers also met a keen sale. The average price per lb for pork was B£d to 9id, and for bacon 7|d to B£d. Store pigs sold as follows: Small and inferior weaners 5s to 11s, medium 12s to 265, good 18s to 225, and best to 275; slips 21s to 265; small stores 26s to 295, medium 32s to 355, large, to 445. There was a short yarding of fat cattle at the Burnside stock sale today, only 142 being penned against 238 for last week, the supply being insufficient for the demand. There was a sharp rise for all. grades of cows and heifers. The sale was a keen one throughout and values for all grades were firmer by £2 10s a head. Extra prim© heavy bullocks made to £27 2s 6d, prime heavy £l9 7s 6d to £22 7s 6d, prime , medium £l6 2s 6d to £lB 12s fid, light and unfinished down to £l3 2s 6d. Extra prime cows and heifers made to’£l7 17s 6d, prime £l4 2s fid to £ls 7s 6d, medium £ll 2s fid to £l3 12s 6d, and light and unfinished £8 2s 6d to £lO 7s 6d. In the store cattle section there was also a small yarding. A nicely bred pen of two-year Shorthorn bullocks realised £8 3s and the few others offered met a keen sale. There was a medium entry of dairy cattle, but the demand was not as keen as at recent sales. For best close-to-profit sorts there was a definite demand at slightly easier values, but for backward and low-conditioned cows and heifers prices' were considerably. easier. In the fat sheep section 2297 were penned against 1792 last week. The quality was the best for several weeks. The market opened with heavy ewes selling in buyers’. favour. 'Medium and light-weight ewes were easier by 2s to 3s a head, and over the final races there was an easing in all grades. Extra prime heavy wethers brought to 535, prime heavy 41s 6d to 46s 6d, prime 35s 6d to 38s 6d. medium 30s 6d to 33s 6d, and light down to 275. Extra prime heavy young ewes brought to 42s 9d, extra prime heavy 36s to 395, prime heavy 32s 6d to 35s 1 , medium 26s to 295, light down to 18s. There was a medium yarding of lat pigs, hut the demand was not as keen as at recent markets. Values opened easier by 6s to 8s a head, but as the sale progressed there Avas a slight firming. . An official statement of the Government’s policy in dealing Avith the potato market is expected to be made late this week.
