LOOKING BACK.

FIFTY YEARS SYNE (From the “Guardian,” Aug. 1,T890). “Jack the Ripper”—Sydney :\ Ten days ago the 'Sydney police received a letter, signed' “Jack the Ripper,” stating that he had arrived, and intended to commence operations in a certain street within a week. The writing when compared with facsimiles of- the letters received by the London police showed a strong resemblance. The police and detectives were strengthened and kept on the alert. The affair, however, is believed to be a. hoax. The police are reticent, and the Press is silent about the matter. Merino Wethers.—A farmer from the Old Country, who recently started in Canterbury, has conceived a new plan for fattening Merino wethers which are too wild to remain quiet in small mobs, namely by hobbling a fore annd hind leg, and turning them adrift in a paddack. If this should succeed it will be a fact well worth knowing.
