CHRISTCHURCH, This Day. According to a cablegram published yesterday, the first consignment of 1000 tons of Canterbury potatoes, sent to Australia under the arrangement for the admission of 5000 tons, has been marketed at £ll a ton. The potatoes were bought at the equivalent of £5 to £5 5s on board. Freight and duty amount to approximately £5 a ton, and to this amount landing, cartage, handling, and selling commission charges have to be added; so there would be little margin for the Internal Marketing Department, which is controlling the export. Arrangements are now practically completed for the second consignment of 1000 tons to leave early iiv August. Some interest has been shown by growers and merchants in a suggestion advanced in an article in the press that New Zealand could find a good market for seed potatoes in South America, since supplies from Europe are now cut off. The first and perhaps tite greatest difficulty is in. arranging for freight at the present time, but if this could be overcome further investigations would appear to be worth while. 1 The potato market locally is still very slow, with no change in the quotation. The following are quotations to farmers on trucks at country sidings, unless otherwise indicated: Wheat—Milling, f.0.b., Tuscan 5s lOd, Hunters Gs, Peai’l 6s 2d, Marquis 6s 3d. (Final payment of 3d a bushel on all wheat at the end of the year.) Oats—A Gartons 3s 9d to 4s, B’s 8s 3d to 3s 6d; Algerians 3s Gd to 3s 9d; Duns 4s to 4s Gd, according to sample.. Ryegrass—Perennial and Italian Gs to 7s, according to sample. Cocksfoot —9d (nominal). White Clover—2s to 2s sd. Red Clover—ls to Is 4d. Partridge Peas—Gs 9d to 7s. Chaff—£6. Barley—Malting, ex stack, 4s IOJd, e> stooic 4s 7-Id; Cape, 4s to 4s Gd; black, 6s to Gs 3d. Potatoes —£2. Onions—£7. Linseed—f.a.q. £25. SOUTH CANTERBURY TIMARU, This Day. Tenders arc now being accepted lor further shipments of potatoes to Australia, otherwise there has been little business on the-South Canterbury grain and produce 'market during the fast week. " ■ Odd orders are being accepted for A aiid B.Carton oats. Nominal quotations for A’s remain at 3s lid with B’s at 3s 8d a. bushel on trucks. Duns are unchanged at 4s Gd and Algerians 1 at 3s 8d a bushel. Contracts have now been let for malting barley for the coming season at the Government price of 4s 7ld a bushel, sacks extra, the same as last year’s rate. This price may be increased. There is a limited demand for chaff at ’£6 a ton, g.h.o.s. on trucks. Linseed is unaltered at £ 24 a ton. With the exception of shipments to Australia, there have been practically no orders lor potatoes as the whole of the North Island is at present overstocked. Growers are anxious to clear their holdings, but at the moment there is very limited buying. White clover remains firm, mainly owing to inquiries for export. Montgomery red clover lias now been declared a prohibited export, and, consequently, the price is inclined to ease. Machine-dressed permanent pasture is now quoted at 3s 2d per lb and mother seed at 3s 3d per lb. There is still a good demand for cocksfoot, principally for export. There is also a- little better demand for Italian and perennial ryegrass for local use. Nominal quotations for commercial ryegrass remain at 13s a bushel. Other prices are: White clover 2s 9d per lb, certified 3s per lb; eowgrass Is 3d per lb; dogstai'l and cocksfoot 9d per lb. THE SHARE MARKET.
