WOMEN’S INSTITUTES.

HINDS MONTHLY MEETING. The Hinds Women’s Institute held its monthly meeting in the Centennial Hall, the president (Mrs Moffatt) presiding over, a good attendance. The motto for the month was “How many a thing that we cast down, when others pick it up becomes a gem.” The roll-call was “the uses of a safety pin.” Tin? Golden Thread talk was continued by Mrs Moffatt, who also gave a talk on a visit to the Channel Islands. Competitions resulted: Article from a flour-bag, Mrs R. Simpson 1, Mrs Moffatt 2; savoury for tea, Mrs J. McQuilkin 1, Mrs Simpson 2; bloom, Mrs Simpson 1 and 2, Mrs Moffatt 3. The hostesses were Mrs McQuilkin and Miss R. Frampton.

THE STAVELEY BRANCH. There was an excellent attendance and one new member was welcomed at the July meeting of the Stavely Women’s Institute,, when the president (Mrs W. Norman) presided. The motto was: “Don’t look at the hill—climb it.” The roll call, “A tall story” caused much amusement. It was decided that no prizes would be presented this year to winners oi tlio various competitions, and that the funds usually allocated to the purchase of prizes bo expended on the pro- ' vision of comforts for local men on active service. Mrs Buiton reported that | four parcels had been forwarded for dispatch to soldiers. It was reported that over 50 garments had been collected for the Lady Galway Guild Appeal. Mrs It. J. Nell undertook the collection of these. Competitions resulted —Pair of golf socks: Miss J. Ogg 1, 'Mrs L. Bansgrove 2, Mrs !K. Grieve 3. Sugar-bag article: Miss J. Ogg 1, Mrs A. Wright 2, Mrs S. Goldsmith 3. Sample of winter soup—Mrs A. Wright 1, Mrs L. Hicks 2, Miss J. Ogg 3. Bloom: Miss J. Ogg I, Mrs A. Wright 2, Miss N. Fitock 3. Spike: Miss A. Smith 1, Miss J .Ogg 2, Mrs L. Bansgrove 3. The hostesses were Mesdames Durran ,Harrison and Totty. At the conclusion of the meeting, Mrs It. J. Biddick took the chair and a Ited Cross meeting was held. It was reported that over £2o had been taken as a result of the recent dance and raffles conducted by the local subcentre.
