OP EM MEETING AT WILLOWBY.

The open meeting of the A\ illowbyEiffelton Women’s Institute was held the in Willowby ‘Hall, the president (Mifes M. M. Lill) presiding over a representative gathering. The president read a prayer for peace. Votes of sympathy with Mrs Harvey and Mrs R. Pearce in bereavement were carried in silence. By the death of the late Mrs W. Maekay, of Christchurch, another member has been removed from the Institute. It was emphasised that her great gift of music was always at the disposal of her friends, and her instructive lectures on musical, subjects were of great value to the community. As one of the first Bachelors of Music in New Zealand, she held an honoured ' place in musical circles in the Dominion. A Golden Thread talk on Jean Batten. was given by Miss Hazel Lill. Mrs P. Read and Miss Hazel Lill were appointed sick visitors for the month. The roll call, “Gifts for Lady Galway Patriotic Fund,” was well responded to. (Mrs Knox was in charge of the sales table and apron stall. Items were given as follows: —Solos, Mrs Craighead (Ashburton); folk dancing and chorus work, Willowby School girls; pianoforte solo, Owen Soal. A shoulder spray of fern and violets was presented to Miss Riddell, of Carcw, who gave an interesting travel talk on a tour through Western Australia, Dutch East Indies, Federated Malay States, Java and Singapore, life being specially emphasised. The hostesses were Mesdames E. Soal, C. Noble, P. Read, A. S. Hayman and Miss H. Lill. The motto was: “A job can’t be done before it’s started —so bustle and got. started.” Competitions resulted: —Floating bowl (6): Mrs B. H. Lill 1, Mrs S. P. Taylor 2, Miss M. M. Lill 3; best bloom (8): Mrs H. Crossman 1, Miss R. H. Lill 2, Mrs Deal 3; knitted scarf for a soldier (9): Mrs R. J. Chapman 1, Miss M. M. Lill 2, Mrs 8. H. Lill 3; eggless cake, Mrs R. J. Chapman 1, Mrs Knox 2, Miss M. *M. Lill and Mrs J. R. La.tti.more (equal) 3. Mrs S. H. Lill proposed a, vote of thanks to all who had assisted to make the evening successful 1 .
