Two Cunard liners, Britannic from Liverpool and Canieronia from Glasgow, arrived at New York.

WAR AND CONSCIENCE. CASES IN BRITAIN. LONDON, July 16. Now that Britain is defending her own shores the question of continuance of exemption of 37,000 conscientious objectors is being raised. The “Daily Mail” estimates that at the present rate of the tribunals’ disposal of objectors’ claims, the cases of 33-year-old objectors duo to be called up this month will not be reached until 1945. As a result four additional tribunals have been created. Even if the pleas are over-ruled appeals can be lodged within 21 days. Most of the objections are based on religions grounds. A 21-year-old stationer's clerk of Liverpool,. Daniel Smith, claimed to be a member of the “Watchtower Bible Tract Society.” An unbidden witness, announcing himself as a workmate of Smith's, described him as “an inveterate gambler and the least Christian member of the staff.”
