BOROUGH COUNCIL

THE FORTNIGHTLY MEETING. REFUGEE CENTRE SCHEME, The Ashburton Borough Council held its fortnightly meeting last evening. There were present the Deputy-Mayor (Da - . J. Connor), Messrs S. Osborne, E. Buchanan, J. Shaw, J. Thompson, H. W. H. Smallbone, A. H. Fenn, A. A. McDonald, S. Mitchell, H. TV. Sherratt and E. C. Bathurst. The financial statement showed that the receipts for the last two weeks had totalled £2149 11s Id.

The City Engineer, Christchurch (Mr A. It. Galbraith) wrote asking, for information in connection with the setting up of refugee centres on the Canterbury Plains in the event of the emergency evacuation of the city, Ashburton being one of these centres.

It was agreed that the Public Utilities Committee, set up. last October, should confer with the Borough and County Councils on the questions raised.

The Canterbury Progress League forwarded copies of its annual report and balance-sheet.

The Ashburton Women’s Hockey Association was granted permission to hold a bring-and-buy table at the Domain next Saturday to raise-funds for its touring representative team. The Ashburton Croquet Club wrote that it did not favour a fence around its lawns, and suggested the placing of keep-off-the grass signs. The suggestion was adopted. The Ashburton Rugby Union was granted closed days at the Ashburton Domain on August 3 and 10. The union’s request that no charge be made for the closed day on August 10, because the funds would be for soldiers' farewell gifts, was also granted. Domain Board. Sitting as a Domain Board, the Council received the report of the Curator (Mr D. IT. Leigh) on work carried out by his staff in the last two weeks. Cemetery Board. Sitting as a Cemetery Board, the Council received the financial statement, which showed a credit balance of £75 3s 2d, and receipts amounring to Cl2 7s 6d in the last two weeks.
