LIQUOR NEAR DANCE HALL. INCIDENT AT RUAPUNA. CASES REAR'D 1 IN COURT TO-DAY. There was only a small list of cases for hearing by Mr H. Morgan, S.M., in the Ashburton Magistrate’s Court this morning. Thomas Hector* Bennett was chargeci With having liquor in his possession iii the vicinity of the Ruapuha Hall when a dance Was in progress there. It was stated that defendant arid men consumed two bottles of beer in a car which was parked near the hall and in which the beer had been brought to the place. . Laurence R. Luxtolr (Mr C. G. deC. Drury) was charged with having failed to give way to traffic on his right at an intersection. A plea of guilty was entered. It was stated that defendant’s car had collided with another which had as a result, run into and smashed a shop window. Mr Drury said that the weather was bad' and defendant was approaching the intersection slowly. There was a service station on liis left and he had watched it carefully while ahead of him there were two people with bicycles. Suddenly the other, car came out of the side street. , It was being driven by a man on a trial run who might have lost his head when the other vehicle appeared. Defendant had had to shut off the engine of the second car, Which was racing wildly. Defendant Was fined £2 10s with 10s costs. ' Frederick Kirdy was charged with having exceeded the speed limit with a heavy vehicle and was fined £2, with 12s costs. Fred Henry Arnst (Mr G. Cl Nicoll) pleaded guilty to a charge of having driven a truck in East Street without due care and attention. It was stated that defendant turned out to the road after having been parked and another car came: no behind him and there was a collision. Arnst had turned to cross' the street. There was heavy rain at the time. Mr Nicoll Said that defendant had glanced into his rear-vision mirror and did see not any other vehicle approaching, apparently because of the rain on the back window. ‘William Roy Drummond Was charged With having operated ah unregistered tractor on thie road at Methven and was fined £l, with 12s costs.

Maintenance Case. James Lane' Weir (Mr J. D. Hutchison) was proceeded against by his wife (Mr Li. A. Charles) for maintenance orders for herself and her 13-year-old daughter-. It was stated that defendant had paid £3 a week to his wife' since they were separated about three years ago. She hd been working as a housekeeper but ill-health was compelling her to give up her work. Mr Hutchison presented balance sheets of defendant’s business in Christchurch, showing that defendant was not able to give bis wife any more than he was allowing her at present. After hearing the evidence of defendant, the Magistrate said it appeared his position was not so bad as he had tried to make out. It setamed he could afford'to pay something more for bis wife and child than he was paying at present. An order for the payment of £2 10s a week for complaintant and £1 a week for the child was made. Civil Business. Judgment for plaintiff by default tyias given in the case of Ashburton Borough Council (Mr L. A. Charles) v. James L. Glendinning, £9 15s 3d, with £1 10s 6d costs.
