RUGBY FOOTBALL. t PUTTING THE BALL IN THE SCRUM. NEIW ZEALAND UNION’S RULING. WELLINGTON, June 12. The executive of the Netwi Zealand Rugby Union this afternoon decided that the practice being followed by some unions in allowing the referee to put the ball, into the scrum must he discontinued, as it was contrary to the laws of the game. The Otago Union wrote asking the New Zealand Union to send a cablegram. to' the English Union requesting a. dispensation to allow the referee to put the ball in the scrum. Southland advised that at'the direction of the New Zealand Union at would . discontinue the practice, but pointed out that the experiment had resulted in a decided improvement to tlie game. They asked the New Zealand Union to endeavour to secure, a special dispensation for the referee to put the hall in the scrum. South Canterbury advised that it would discontinue the practice, hut also stated • that the experiment had produced an improvement.

TIMA'R.U UNION’S DECISION. TTMAJRiU, June 11. A decision that the ball should be placed in the scrum by the referee was reached at the weekly meeting of the Management Committee of the South Canterbury Rugby Union. The union played under this rule earlier in the season, but agreed recently to go back to the practice of having the. ball placed in the scrum by a player. A letter was received from the Auckland Union which stated that it had received a circular from the New Zealand Union to the effect that the practice of the referee putting the ball in the scrum must be discontinued. No action had been taken in Auckland and the referee was continuing to out the. ball in the scrum. On the motion of Mr J. H. Harley it was decided that the union carry on with the practice of the ball being put in the scrum by the referee' until a, dispensation was granted by the New Zealand Union.
