In fine weather and on an excellent track for this period of the year the Ashburton Trotting Club held its winter meeting on Saturday, and the sum of £30,664 10s put through the totalisator represented a splendid effort in face of adverse conditions. Last year the Club handled £39,617 on its own course, but then the meeting was held on June 3, a general holiday. Concluding results:— Acton Handicap, of £225; 3.30 class; one mile and a half —9 (8) Old Faithful 12yds (J. Bell) 1, 4 (3) Rowi 12yds (P. Gallagher) 2, 1 i(l) Royal Grattan sc-r (J. Pringle) 3. AUCKLAND RACING CLUB. VALMINT SUCCESSFUL. AUCKLAND, June 1. The Auckland Racing Club’s Great Northern meeting opened at Ellerslie to-day in overcast and showery weather. The attendance was 20,500. The track was heavy. The totalisator handled £69,543 10s for eight races, compared with £59,606 10s for seven races last year. Concluding results:—• Cornwall Handicap, of £600; one mile and a-quarter—l-1 Valmint, 7.5 (Wiggins) 1, 7-7 Royal Appellant, 9.0 2, 16-16 Silver Cloud, 7.1 3. Won by a length and three-quarters; two lengths and a-half second and third. WANGANUI JOCKEY CLUB. DARK EAGLE SURPRISES. WANGANUI, June 1. The Wanganui steeplechase meeting opened in fine but overcast weather. The course provided fine winter going.
