In fine weather and on an excellent track for this period of the year the Ashburton Trotting Club held its winter meeting on Saturday, and the sum of £30,664 10s put through the totalisator represented a splendid effort in face of adverse conditions. Last year the Club handled £39,617 on its own course, but then the meeting was held on June 3, a general holiday. Concluding results:— Acton Handicap, of £225; 3.30 class; one mile and a half —9 (8) Old Faithful 12yds (J. Bell) 1, 4 (3) Rowi 12yds (P. Gallagher) 2, 1 i(l) Royal Grattan sc-r (J. Pringle) 3. Won by a head; three lengths between second and third. Great Blaze was foiijrtb. Times, 3.20, 3.20 1-5, 3.21 3-5. Winter Handicap, of £275: 2.48 class; one mile and a quarter—l (1) Accountant scr (It. Donald) 1,2 (2) Wee Potts scr (J. Bryce, jun.) 2, 10 (10) Harold Guy 12yds (J. Fraser) 3. Won by two lengths; half a length Iretween second 'and third. Loyal Pat was fourth. Times, 2.45 1-5, 2.45 2-5, 2.45.

AUCKLAND RACING CLUB. VALMINT SUCCESSFUL. AUCKLAND, June 1. The Auckland Racing Club’s Great Northern meeting opened at Ellerslie to-day in overcast and showery weather. The attendance was 20,500. The track was heavy. The totalisator handled £69,543 10s for eight races, compared with £59,606 10s for seven races last year. Concluding results:—• Cornwall Handicap, of £600; one mile and a-quarter—l-1 Valmint, 7.5 (Wiggins) 1, 7-7 Royal Appellant, 9.0 2, 16-16 Silver Cloud, 7.1 3. Won by a length and three-quarters; two lengths and a-half second and third. Time, 2.15 3-5, Hunt Club Hurdles, of £350; two milees—3-2 Makoi, 9.12 (Ritchie) 1, 1-1 Hirangi, 11.7 2, 2-4 Sockettes, 9.1 3. Won by a head; four lengths second and third.

Members’ Handicap, of £400; six furlongs—6-4 Aero King, 8.7 (McTavish) 1, 1-1 Llandaff, 8.3 2, 11-10 Royal Message, 8.0 3. Won by a neck; same second and third. Time, 1.18 1-5.

WANGANUI JOCKEY CLUB. DARK EAGLE SURPRISES. WANGANUI, June 1. The Wanganui steeplechase meeting opened in fine but overcast weather. The course provided fine winter going. The attendance was satisfactory, find the totalisator handled £17,396 10s, against £20,341 10s last year. Concluding results Connolly Handicap, of £300: one mile and a quarter —7 Dark Eagle 7.7 (W. J. Stevens) 1,2 Amigo 10.3 2, 4 Colonel Bogey 7.7 3. Won by half a length; a head between second and third. Time, 2.9 4-5. Winter Oats, of £200; six furlongs—--2 Lord Cavendish 8.6 (S. The totalisator handled £16,863, compared with £24,406 10s on the first day last year.
