FLOOD PROTECTION.
WORK ON THE HINDS RIVER. PROMISE BY THE, MINISTER. According to advice received by the Ashburton County Council,'the Minister of Public Works (the Hon. R. Semple) has promised Mr T. D. Burnett, M.P., that, to decrease the possibility <F the Hinds Iliver flooding wheatgrowing land nearby, a stump-pullci will be put to work to pull the ovor-m-owtli of willow trees from the riverbed. Further. Mr Semple informed Mr Burnett that he would see the’ Minister of Finance (the Hon. W.-Nash) regarding financing a scheme to drain the land between the Ashburton and Rangitata Rivers east of the railway. He emphasised, however, that it was specially necessary to make a start with the construction of cut-offs which would give temporary relief.
