THE EVACUATION
MURDEROUS BOMBARDMENT. MEN DUG IN ON THE BEACH. ORDEAL ENDURED FOR HOURS. (United Press Association. —Copyright.) (Received This Day, 10.30 a.m.) LONDON, May 31. Heroes from Flanders arc still returning. Those who could walk or swim dug themselves in the sand on the beach and waited for hours under a murderous aerial bombardment until the bulk of their disabled comrades embarked. The difficulties or evacuation increased every hour. Many of the transports wore bombed on both the outward and the homeward journey.
The German artillery is now shelling Dunkirk but the men say they are confident their comrades are still maintaining a gallant rearguard action and will get away under the screen of the Allied navies.
