CAR PARKING.
MUCH NEEDED REFORM.
A.A. SAFETY AIESSAGE. “A movement is .afoot to induce the Transport Department to frame a regulation making it obligatory on motorists to allow a. space, of at least three foot between .vehicles parked parallel,” says tho latest road safety .message-.of the. Automobile Association, Canterbury, Jnc. “This useful suggestion, simple,’ and commonsense, focusses attention on a form of motoring laxity which has proclaimed itself very loudly for a long time. The demand for a national (regulation on the. subject follows the carelessness of many motorists who have been the. cause of damage to other ears, as well as their own • and they have boon the cause of great inconvenience to other motorists.
“Surely, it is commonsense to expect a driver so to park his vehicle that he will be able to drive his car safely away from the parking place without bumping and damaging the car in front or at the rear. Not a few motorists drive close up behind a car, the following ear repeats the performance, and the car in the, middle is effectively boxed so that it cannot ba driven away until either of the other two cars is shifted. If the cars happen to he locked the trouble can be readily visualised. The cause, of the trouble is the failure of each driver to ensure that there is three feet, at least, of clear space between his ear and the one ahead. It is then quite clear that a driver -has three feat in front and three in the rear in which to manoeuvre. And when egress is made there is also the advantage of providing a (reasonable space into which the next arrival may reverse with comparative ease. “Aiotorists could make their motoring much more pleasant, attract less attention from officialdom, and save petrol, irritation and expense, if they gave a thought to the need for sensible parking. Study your own needs and those of the other fellow.”
