OPEN EWE FAIR

TINWALD FIXTURE.

PRICES DISAPPOINTING. Due probably to buyers’ fear of continued dry weather, values at the Tinwald open ewe fair to-day were distinctly disappointing, being generally down on tlioso at the County Breeders’ fair last week. , The entry was estimated to ,he in the vicinity of 14,000, being much smaller than at the corresponding sale last year-, when over $3,000 ewes were offered. The bigger percentage of the yarding comprised young sheep, and, considering the trying climatic conditions, they looked in excellent condition. '

A large number of lines were from hill stations.

Prices ranged from about 10s Od to 28s Od, the latter price being secured by Lowe Bros. (Hinds) for a nice lot of 20 two-tooths. This top price does not' compare favourably with the 38s 6d obtained last week. Top prices obtained at the County Breeders’ and open fairs last year were 32s 6d and 26s 3d respectively. The best return at Methven this season was 30s Od. The sale commenced at 11 a.m. with two-tooths, and there was a large number of passings. The principal sales (all two-tooths) up till about 1 o’clock were: — Pyne, Goiild, Guinness, Ltd., sold — On account of Low'e Bios. (Hinds), 20 at 28s 9d; J.
