... . FIFTY YEARS SYNE (From the “Guardian,” Alar. 18, 1800) Catholic Church at Methven.—On next Sunday the. new Catholic Church at Alethveii will be solemnly opened for divine service. The Rev. Father Chastagnon will be accompanied by the very Rev. Father Kirk, of Wanganui, who will officiate and preach. There will be vespers at the usual hour.
Alford Forest School Committee gave the school children their long looked for annual treat on Friday last, for which, cakes, tarts, sandwiches and apples had been provided by the generous mothers in the district. The different classes were arranged according to their ages, and ran races for prizes given by the committee. The distribution of prizes and a dance followed.
TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO. i ' (From the “Guardian,” Alar. 18, 1915) Ashburton Show.—The first day of the Ashburton Agricultural and Pastoral Association’s 38tli annual exhibition (third autumn show) was successfully terminated late yesterday afternoon. By that time the bulk of the judging had been done, and' the work of the officials and the general arrangements were very well advanced, and everything was in order for the big day to follow.. The attendance was the cause of the only regrets the president and his committee voiced, for the gate takings wore found to have dropped to £l2 19s as against £lB 9s 3d on the first day last year, and £l6 9s 6d in 1913. Cost of *A\ r ar—Air Edgard Crammond, in an address to. the . Royal Statistical Society, said the cost of the war was 9000 millions sterling a year. Belgium’s loss was 526 millions, including 250 millions in destruction of property. - A year’s cost of war to Germany would be 2775 millions, including 958 millions for decreased production and 879 millions for capitalised value of human life compared with a cost to Great Britain of 1258 millions. The w*ar indemnity and compensation levied bv the victors would be 4500 millions.
