New Sppqies—Mr Porter, nurseryman, of Allcnton, has brought to our office some very choice blooms of antirrhinum, comprising some nine or ten distinct varieties. These are seedlings raised by Mr Porter from imported seeds. An Advertisement—H. Childs, shoeing and general blacksmith and engineer (late of Cherts'ey), begs to notify that he has commenced business in Ashburton, in the premises in Wakanui Road, lately occupied by Mr C. Ray, engineer, where he hopes to merit a fair share of public support. Wheat—London, New Zealand wheat on passage, average quality, is quoted at 365. Local market: Tuscan 3s 3d to 3s 4d, pearl 2s lid to 3s, hunters 2s 9d to 2s lOd. Potatoes, nominally £1 to £1 10s at country stations. Butter, 5d to 5 id. TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO (From tho “Guardian, ’’ Dec. 2, 1914). The War—A heavy force of Germans has been sent to Ypres to make a supreme effort to capture the town. A great battle is raging between tho Yser and the Lys. Two British airmen on Monday dropped bombs in the military grounds at Ghent and wounded seven German soldiers. The Germans at Courtrai requisitioned 2,000,000 francs’ worth of goods. ‘ The town has been transformed into a huge hospital, but even now there as insufficient accommodation for the-wounded, 5000 of whom arrived in onf day.
Patriotic Funds—The “Guardian" list at 11 a.m. to~day totalled £163 9s 7d for the Belgium- relief. TheBritish relief fund hail reached £2052 7s 4d at noon, including £143 from the Fairfield Patriotic Carnival.
Mines Laid—New York: Captain Davies, of the steamer. Etoman., reports the discovery of contact, mines off Fire Island, directly in the track of transAtlantic shipping.
