The level of the Wairau River fell noticeably yesterday afternoon and last night, but road and rail communication with Picton is still blocked. Only large cars can negotiate the south highway at Riverlands, where water is over the road for a considerable distance. The main highway to Nelson is still affected by the Wakamarina. River at Canvastown, and the only route available to Nelson is via the Tophouse. Flood waters in tho Spring Creek and Tuamarina areas have receded, but many -of the low-lying areas are still covered to a depth of several feet. With clearer weather in the back country and the cessation of rain in the districts near Blenheim there is every indication that the worst of the flooding is over.
