DRINK AT DANCES.

PRESBYTERIAN COMMENT. (Per Press Association). ■ CHRISTCHURCH, November 20. Congratulations for the Government and criticism for the utterances of some members, of the Parliament were expressed at to-day’s session of General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church. The discussion arose during consideration of the temperance committee’s report. It was agreed to congratulate the Government on taking legislative action controlling drinking at dances and in and about danae halls. The Rev. C. J A (convener of the temperance committee) said that one remark of the Rev. Clyde Carr, M.P. for Timaru, during the debate in the House, "was as disgraceful an utterance as had ever been made in public life in New Zealand." He also criticised in general terms the attitude of some other members of Parliament. The Rev. H. G. Gilbert said it was still possible to get drink at some dances in the North Island. A scheme had been evolved by which the regulations could be evaded by the formation of a club.

Ar w, Mr Gilbert will give me particulars; of that rat-hole:, I believe we can’stop it," said Mr Tocker. A member quoted instances where dances and other functions had been held in school buildings, and on the following day the children had been confronted by an array of beer bottles.
