GRANDFATHER PUPIL.
MAORI WISHES TO START SCHOOL (Per Press Association). AUCKLAND, November 17. Life begins at forty for some men, but when a Maori aged sixty-five applied ito be enrolled in Primer 1 at a country school in the Auckland district the Auckland Education Board felt it bad to draw the line. ' The headmaster of the school in question, washed his bands of the question when the Maori insisted on attending the school, and decided to throw the responsibility on the board. There was a ripple of amusement when the letter was read at Wednesday's meeting. “There is no school committee here and I do not know what to do about it,” wrote the headmaster. “The Maori is sixty-five years old and is in receipt of age benefits under the Social Security Act. He lias never been to school and is illiterate, but lie is apparently sincere in liis desire to learn: He insists on being enrolled in-P,rimer 1, but I hardly think that this is desirable because his own grandchildren are in this class.” The board agreed.
