THE ASHBURTON BRANCH.

INTERESTING ADDRESSES GIVEN.

The Ashburton branch of the Women’s Christian Temperance Union met yesterday. In the absence of the President (Miss Jackson), the vicepresident (Mrs R. S. Watson) presided over a very good attendance. Mrs W. H. Robinson reported on the Jubilee celebrations of the Wakanui 1.0.G.T. She said that 5(30 .members had passed through' the Lodge since its inauguration. Mr Bock (a missionary on furlough from China) spoke on the work of the Women’s Christian Temperance Union amongst the Chinese.

The treasurer (Mrs G. Tulloch) submitted the half-yearly rep .mt and bal-ance-sheet, which was very satisfactory. The sum of £5 was passed for payment to the organising fund. 1 \ Mrs Aitkenliead read a Temperance fact:—“The so-called good liquor’ now sold legally kills more people than ‘bootleg booze’ did during prohibition days. (Dr, Lolir’s statement).” Mrs Watson gave * short address on the work of missionaries among the Lepers of Fiji, who are’isolated on ‘a 1 ; small island. Many doctors and nurses devoted their lives to the task of caring for these unfortunate people, she said. 1 Gifts are gratefully received.
