APPEAL FOR TOLERANCE
(Per Press Association). HAMILTON, July 3
An appeal to Ohjristians not to be critical of the standards and ideas of others was made by Archbishop Averill in, a sermon in St. Peter’s Cathedral, Hamilton. The service marked the opening of the Waikato Diocesan Synod. “Before we condemn the rise of totalitarianism, whether Communistic or Fascist, before we seek to remove the mote from ,'the eye of the other nations, ought we not to consider whether we: have ‘sold the pass’ to enemies of Christ by not claiming and demanding totalitarian rights tor Him.” said Archbishop Averill. “We have no right to criticise others until we are as sure as we- can be that our ideals,, standards and conduct are consistent with our own religious profession.” The Church had a gyeat opportunity to-day, the Archbishop continued. There was a. definite call to, Christendom to close its ranks and to manifest something of the boldness which once caused enemies of Christ’s Apostles to marvel at those who had been with Jesus.
