HOCKEY NOTES

ASHBURTON WOMEN’S GAMES. / ” SOME GOOD PLAY WITNESSED. The Ashburton Women’s Hockey Association started the competitions in earnest last Saturday. By all appearances a good season should be experienced, as players are keen and all clubs have quite a number of young players who are willing to learn. The only game played in the Domain last Saturday was between Lowcliffe and Timvald seniors.. Tt was pleasing to see quite a number of experienced players again wielding the stick in the Tinwald team thus giving it the strength to maintain a senior grade. An outstanding feature of this game was the fast pace at which it started. No fewer than nine goals were scored in the first 15 minutes of the game, and the remaining three were not scored until within 15 minutes of the finish Lowcliffe deservedly/ winning by 7 goals to 5. Tinwald has a fairly well-balanced team although the backs are not overstrong. The forwards are a lively lot, and with practice will develop into a strong combination. On Saturday the centre, M. Henderson, the right-inner, S. Chibnall, and the right-wing, F. Gudsell, all wandered over to the left and bunched too much. Had the inner players fed their wings to better advantage the defence would have been more tried, Tinwald’s goal shooting was good and very few shots were missed. M. Donaldson combined well with h:r sister, and by following in after a good shot netted a fine goal. R. Donaldson and N. Loach are a tower of strength in the Tinwald backs. The Lowcliffe club has fielded a strong senior team and it should be hard to beat. As yet, combination is lacking but it will come. Edith Anderson has returned to the game and is a splendid asset to Lowcliffe forward line. Although inclined to hunclx her centre, she plays well with her left wing, A. Dutton, and the centre, Jean Hawke. The right-wing, P. Barnes, and the right-inner, J. Harris, .are botli young, speedy and fit, and on present appearances are going to be a good right-wing attack. As usual, Lowcliffe’s half-line, although not brilliant, put in some real hard work and much of the credit for the win must go to them. Pearl Hawke and Joyce Hansen, the two hacks are just as sure and steady as they were last season although a fast following forward is liable to bustle them, as was demonstrated on Saturday. Both teams' goal-keepers did a good day’s work and saved their respective teams on quite a number of occasions. One thing was very noticeable and that- was most players waited for the ball to come to them with the result that many good interceptions were made. The Ashburton Association is short of referees and any old player or anyone interested would he gladly welcomed to assist on Saturday afternoons.
