FINE DISPLAY

ACHIEVEMENT DAY EXHIBITS.

COUNTRY EDUCATION LECTURES., HELPFITT, FEATURES INDICATED. A display that well demonstrated the profitable work carried out* by the various women’s Institutes and/branches of the Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union during the past year, as a result of tuition under the Association of Country Education scheme, was seen to-day when an excellent and comprehensive exhibition of work by the groups was tastefully arranged in the Baring Square Schoolroom. Many arrangements were made by the resident tutor (Miss Bay Robins), while extensive preparations were carried out by the advisory committee, of the Association and the groups.

The display was opened this afternoon by the Mayor (Dr. G. I. Miller), who congratulated the Association and the groups on the fine exhibition, and emphasised the benefits received through the particular course of education, which, he said, was so important to the country woman.

The exhibition consisted mainly of a, series of small bays, in which the groups which have had lectures staged an exhibit illustrating some aspect of A.C.E. work, which the members'had found particularly interesting or helpful. The display on the whole was a fitting conclusion to a very successful year’s activities.

The following groups had exhibits: —Highbank Institute: Display of necklines. Hinds Institute: Display showing the faults in the Dominion diet.. Hampstead Institute: Milk as a daily food. Methven-Winch more Division: Diets, thinning and fattening. Staveley Institute. Diet for hyperacidity and diet for subacidity. Methven Institute: Wholemeal. Rakaia Institute: Advanced dressmaking, and lime in food. Chertsey-Pendarves: An outstanding display *of salads. Willowby-Eiffelton Institute: Dress designs. Seafield Division: Colour schemes. Ashburton and Allenton Institutes: Remedies for goitre. Dorie Institute: Iron in foods. Mayfield Institute: Roughage. Lowcliffe Institute: Ways of using cheese. Fairton Institute: Shampoo of furniture.

To illustrate tho effect of diet upon growing animals, the staff of the Home Science School and the Association for Country Education at Dunedin prepared an exhibit consisting of nearly a score of white rats. These, since they were weaned a month ago, have all been caged in separate cages and are being fed on diets consisting of the foods used in typical good and bad school lunches, good and bad dinners, good and bad diets for babies. These rats were brought up from Dunedin, and the size, condition, and health ot these reflected the nutritive value of the respective diets.
