Mr D. A. Lawson, formerly of the Ashburton branch of the National Mortgage and Agency Co., and now of Christchurch Was a .visitor to Ashburton to-dav.

Sergeant A. E. M. Lawrence, of the New Zealand Permanent Staff, Ghriistchurch, has taken up his duties in charge of the Ashburton military area in place of Sergeant-Major W. Edmonds, W. 0.1., who will retire after Christmas.

Miss Merle Brown, of Ashburton, gave singing items at the Canterbury TraYfel Club’s {reception to Dr. Alfred Hall (Canada), in Christchurch yesterday. Dr. Hall is Director-General of the World Fellowship of Faith and service and is at present touring New Zealand.

Constable T. Kennedy, of Ashburton, has passed the literary examination qualifying for commissioned ranks, in the annual promotion examinations held'in Christchurch in September. The successful candidates in the examinations have qualified for promotion, but will have to wait until vacancies occur.

Mr W .Hunter, educational officer of the Ashburton Amateur Swimming Centre, has received advice that he has been awarded the New Zealand Amateur Swimming Association’s blazer for his work during the learn-to-swim campaign last season. At the meeting of the Ashburton Swimming Centre last evening, congratulations were extended to Mr Hunter on the results of his work and the recognition received from the Council.
