ST. JAMES THEATRE. Not .since “A Farewell to Arms has so memorable ;n love story laid against a background of the aftermath of the World War come to the screen as “Three Comrades,” filmisation of the Erich Marfa Remarque novel, which opened at the St. James Theatre this afternoon for a two-day showing. Rarely has so completely satisfactory a combination of story, players aiici director been given a film drama as in this story of four people, dazed by their experiences in a war-torn generation and attempting to find rehabilitation in a new world of mocking illusions. With Robert Taylor, 'Margaret Sullavan, Franchot Tone, mid Robert Young filling the stellar assignments, and- with a supporting cast comprising such fine performers as Guy Kibbee, Lionel Atwill, Henry Hull, Charley Grnpewih and Monty Woolley, the picture’s characters come vividly to life. Frank Borzagc, ducctor of such memorable love stories as “Humoresque” and “Seventh Heaven,” has achieved another stirring narrative in his direction of • Three Comrades.”

The splendid supporting programme includes “Modeling for Money,” with Pete Smith, “How To Raise a Baby,” with Robert Benchley, providing the fun, and a cartoon “A Day at the Beach.”

SILVER BAND CONCERT. The third honorary members’ concert to bo presented by the Ashburton Silver Band in the St. Andrew’s Hall next Tuesday promises excellent entertainment for all. A long and varied programme has been arranged and the services of well-known artists have been obtained. Tbe trip and solo selections of Misses Bessie Pollard (piano), Thelma Cusack (violin) and Nancy Estall (’cello) will bo well worth hearing, as will the soprano and baritone items of Mrs C. E. Petbybridge and Air Jim Henderson. Two one-act plays will be presented. A feature of the evening's entertainment will be the playing over of first records taken of items by the Hand. The pieces were recorded during the Band’s last broadcast from 3YA, and have not yet been presented publicly.
