FIFTY YEARS SYNE. (From the “Guardian” Nov.. 26,...1.888) Ashl/.irton Racing Chib —-A meeting of the committee of the Ashbdrton Tradesmen’s Racing Club was held last evening. Mr A. J. Kelly was appointed clerk of the scales in place o>f MT J. sp. Duncan, who resigned. Mr T. Quill wrote resigning the position of handicapper to the club. The resignation was accepted with regret, and it was to ask 'My D. O’Brien if he would fill the office.

Colonel Bailey Ims notified, the Ashburton offices that the parade proposed to be held at Timaru on Anniversary Day will mot take plade. It is intended to have a general parade of all South Canterbury Corps at Timaru on Boxing Day, on which date tnere is also to he a grand military tournament on the Timaru racecourse.

Farmers’ Co-op —A meeting of farmers was held at Grecnstreet School on Monday night for the purpose of listening to a lecture oil co-operation delivered by Mr W. B. Moss the secretary of the Ashburton Farmers’ Co-oper-ative Association. Mi* I Sargent was voted to the chair. Mr Moss addressed the meeting at considerable length, pointing out the necessity for establishing a Co-operative Association in the district, and the advantages ,to be derived from it.

County Council—At the meeting of the Ashburton. County Council to-day, the Balance sheet for the six months ended September 30, duly audited was placed on the table. Previously there have been several “tags” attached to the balance sheet, but there was only one affixed to that before the Council to-day, being an item in connection with * the chairman’s tra velling expenses. The chairman said that the same objection had been made before, and he had to refund the money. Parliament was (bringing into force, an Act by which the Council could make the chairman an annual allowance. If each separate item had been sent forward, the amounts would have been passed. Members generally admitted that the present position was unreasonable and it was decided to get a legal opinion in regard to the matter.
