GUNS FOR HAWAII.
V//.ST EXPENDITURE PLANNED
HEAVIER COASTAL ARTILLERY
WASHINGTON, October 2G
The United States is planning to spend vast sums in strengthening the defences of Hawaii. This is stated on excellent authority.
The island will receive the greatest share of the money to be spent in the next two years upon improving defences there and at Puerto Rico, Alaska, and the Panama Canal zone.
The total sum will be a peace-time record for work oi such a nature.
Hawaii’s coastal artillery will be heavily reinforced. Underground munition chambers will be constructed and large numbers of anti-aircraft guns will bo installed.
The situation in Europe and the Far East is believed to have convinced the Administration that America’s insular frontiers must bo more heavily guarded.
