MUSIC EXAMINATIONS.
PASSES IN ASHBURTON. PRACTICAL SECTION (DECIDED. Practical and theory examinations in music were conducted under the auspices of the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music (London) at Ashburton on Saturday by Mr Eric Grant, B.Mus. (London), F.R.A.IYi., A.R.0:0.
Mr Grant began his career early when he studied as a church musician under Dr. G. J'. Huntley. He obtained his Bachelor of Music degree at the University of London in 1912, and entering the Royal Academy of Music won the Goring Thomas scholarship for composition, and the Charles Lucas prize. After the Great War when he served with the Royal Engineers in France, he joined the staff of the Royal Academy where he is now a Professor of Pianoforte and Composition. He has been an examiner for the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music since 1926, recently coming to New Zealand from South Africa. Passes in the practical examinations were announced by the secretary for the Ashburton District (Miss M. I. Woods) on Saturday evening, distinctions to be awarded later. Candidates names are given in alphabetical order, and the examination passed is in pianoforte unless otherwise stated: — Grade 7—Rosie l)en ley (Miss A. Ruddock).

Grade 3 —John Fotheringhani (Convent), Alma Griffiths (Miss Woods), Margaret Maynard (Miss Watt). Until Sewell (.Miss D'. McLeod) Dorothy Thompson, violin (Convent).
