AIR PRECAUTIONS.
BRITAIN’S ELABORATE PLANS. (United Press Association—Copyright.) LONDON, November 5. Air Raid Precaution accommodation for a staff of 22,000 persons, including a bombproof shelter at the centre for essential control services, a blast-proof concrete shelter for 400 women members of the staff, and an extensive trench system to shelter male workers is being completed by the Austin Company at the Longbridge factory near Birmingham, at a cost of £20,000. In time of air raid only one man would be left in, the factory in charge of the boiler house. From two splinterproof observation posts on high ground occupants would report by internal telephone to fire-fighting, decontamination and rescue squads and to a first-aid service housed in underground shelters. There .will be a three hours black-out covering 640 square miles of Hertfordshire to-night, in conjunction with Air Raid Precautions exercises on the part of 34 administrative authorities within the country area. This is the first big Air Raid Precautions exercise attempted near. London. It is expected to be the most complete and impressive yet held, since the personnel is almost fully recruited.
