FOUR BATTLESHIPS.
UNITED STATE® BUILDING. HUGE EXPENDITURE INVOLVED. (United Press Association —Copyright.) WASHINGTON, Nov. 2. Bids have been opened and considered satisfactory for the construction at private yards of three 35,000ton battleships. These, with a fourth vessel being built at the Navy yard, will cost about 280,000,000 dollars. • This is greater than the original, cost of all the battleships now in the United States fleet.
The four new battleships will he offensively equal > if not superior, to any comparable ships in the world. They ivill carry nine 16-inch guns, and their speed will exceed 25 knots. The Navy Department also announced a modification of the ban on the buildings of rigid airships, permitting the immediate construction, for training and developmental purposes, of a metal-covered airship 325 feet in length, with a gas capacity of 1,000,000 cubic feet! It will cost 3,000,000 dollars.
