THE TURF.

N.Zi CUP TO-MORROW. form selections. (By “Torpedo.”) The first day of the Spring meeting of the Canterbury Jockey Club will be held to-morrow, when the chief flat contest in the Dominion, the New Zealand Cup, will ho run, the stake being worth £2OOO. The field this year is well up to the average for the event, and as most of the horses have had a deal of recent racing experience backers will have form to guide them in their selections. Betting will be on the win and place system. The day’s sport will commence at noon with— The Spring Hurdles, Not a very classy lot have accepted for in this race, although it is a wellbalanced field which should provide a great race. Xddo, from Hawke’s Bay, has proved himself a weight-carrier, hut 11.9 will be a steadier if the race is at all fast run. Mr J. li.. Grigg’s Flashlight was produced at Motukarara, but looked as though it could do with a little more work. Mount Val has proved himself a smart newcomer, and may be hard to head off here. Superex, Silver Sight, and Tdp Rank are all doing good track work, and favourite indications are for—

Top Rank Silver Sight Mount Val Spring Plate. Lord Nuffield and Reaupartir should dispute favouritism in the Spring Plate and these two should make the pace a merry one. Wagner is handily placed, hut it is hard to go past the public elect. Lord Nuffield Reaupartir Linwood Handicap. This is one of the best fields of tho day, and the winner is well obscured. With only ten pounds between top and bottom weights, backers are set a problem to select a fancy from the big field. Thermidor has been running consistently, and the same may be said ot ; Straightdel. Rebellion nearly brought it off at Banks Peninsula, while Miss Bluff would only have to repeat Ashburton form to be in the money. Phalanx is the class horse in tho field, but barrier positions will play an important part in the finish. With a quick beginning Sigurd would be one of the hardest to beat. The form horses are—• Rebellion Sigurd Thermidor The New Zealand Gup. Eighteen have paid the filial acceptance for the New Zealand Cup, the only surprise deflection being Happy Night. The veteran Argentic is given pride of place with nine stone, but the gelding has reached the age where he will benefit under the Social Security Scheme. Willie' Win was produced at the Peninsula, but had a badly filled leg. It is doubtful whether this trouble will have cleared up sufficiently by Saturday l to permit of a good race. Padishah, winner of tho Wellington Cup and later of the Grand National Hurdles is the ante-post favourite, but lie will make turf history if he rakes this event after winping a G.N. Hurdle race. However, lie is particularly well and the distance will not bother him. The Buzzer is a younger horse, but be would be preferred over a shorte rdistaince. Malagigi is in form, but away down in the weights is the Wellington winner Sly Fox, and he is the logical form favourite for the event. He lias done everything that has been asked of him, and should the track be bolding bis chances will bo enhanced. Rosseau ran disappointingly at Motukarara, but that may have been one of his off days. The race this year is capable of creating a surprise and ill this division may be mentioned Milford and Mungatoon. Both have done well in lesser company and Mungatoon is the right type to win this event. It will be a great betting race, in which the public may go for— l

Sly Fox Padishah The Buzzer Welcome Stakes. Nine horses have accepted for this five furlong flutter, the stake for which is £750. Class 1 is well represented and outstanding in this connection is Winning Rival. Beau Livre has been performing well of late and may be one of the favoured division. Master Hotspur will doubtless be favoured to the remainder and the final tally may indicate Winning Rival Roan Livre. Master Hotspur. Apprentices’ Handicap. Backers 1 will select horses ridden by the more experienced youngsters and good strong horses will he sought after. Lady Middleham ran away from all opposition at Bank’s Peninsula and a repetition of that form would see her hard to heat here. Plumage was a winner at Rangiora, while Chirp won a highweight last Saturday. Auctor is duo for a change of luck, while Thermidor, if reserved for this event, will not lack support. In a difficult race, the favourites may he Rustem Lady Middleham Plumage Stewards’ Handicap This is the second leg of the big double and is always one of the most interesting races of the season. . The most brilliant sprinters in commission

have been gathered together, this year and, it the track is fast, there should be a last time recorded. Counterblast is the early favourite on the strength of his sterling win at Wellington and with a gift impost on his back must bo very bard. Cay Son always run an honest race and if the pace is slow in the early stages Triune will bo there when the whips are cracking. The Aucklander Peter Becld'ord has not come all this way to have a change of grass and his connections are confident of success. Both Gay Chou and Ivinnouli may find their weight too much, hut .Rebel Mate and Paper Slipper are handily placed. In this race betting will take a wide range, hut not much money will separate Counterblast Triune Cay Son. Riccarton Handicap. Wild Chase heads the list in the concluding event and may he the elect t>f hackers'. Viking ran second at Gore in fast time and Night Wings performed well at the same meeting.
