TEMPERANCE UNION.

THE ASHBURTON ACTIVITIES. The monthly meeting of the Women’s Christian Temperance Union was held in the Methodist Schoolroom, Ashburton, on Tuesday. There was a very good attendance. Sister Mildred presided and led the devotions. A motion of sympathy in her bereveament was passed to Mrs Argyle, of Leeston, members standing while Mrs Tulloeh led in prayer. A letter was received from the Borough Council,’ soliciting donations for the relief of Chinese children. Mrs Tinker proposed that a collection be taken up at the next meeting. This was seconded by Mrs Tulloeh. Mrs Aitkenliead extended a welcome to Mrs Livingstone, late of Mosgiel. Mrs Tulloeh reported that the result of the special effort had been very satisfactory, over £7 liavting been taken.

It was resolved that a letter be •written to the Borough Council commending the Mayor and Councillors on the opening of the new women’s restrooms, and on the excellent and adequate appointments. Mrs Tinker spoke on the National Council of Women organisation, stating that the superintendent Trent), was expected to visit Ashburton in February.

Mrs Aitkenliead reported on the recent convention held in Christchurch. A hearty vote of thanks to her was proposed by Mrs R. S. Watson, seconded by Miss A. Watson. Mrs Buckler briefly reported on the visit of Ashburton members to Mayfield. Afternoon tea was served.
