PUBLIC WORKS

RANGITATA DIVERSION CHANNEL PROGRESS IN ANAMA DISTRICT. BIG MACHINES IN OPERATION. The Public Works gang has made good progress with the Rangitata diversion channel during the last few weeks. On the Downs several bulldozers and tractors are working at a steep angle in the hillside, taking off the top surface and making a shelf on which to make the channel.

Cabbage trees and manuka scrub fall like small sticks in front of the great Diesel bulldozers, and are pushed down the hillside clear of the bank. A patch of stiff blue pug in one place, is difficult for the machine to keep a grip at such an angle, but it is gradually disappearing down the hill, and soon will be all gone, and; a flat place left for the excavating machinery to carry on. The powerful lights of the machines working at nights can be seen nearly all over the Anama district.
