Ashburton Guardian Magna est Veritas et Prævalebit. WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 2, 1938. THE ASHBURTON SHOW.

Though the numerical strength of the entries in the stock sections of the sixty-second Agricultural and Pastoral Show at Ashburton is not as great as in some previous years the display tomorrow will be as attractive as ever. After all the difference in numbers will not be apparent to any but those particularly interested; it is quality that appeals most to the great bulk of those who attend. And quality, so tar as Ashburton is concerned, has long been of a standard that delights the eye and engenders thought on the prosperity and progress of the district from the point of view of This characteristic of quality is not confined to animals that may catch the judge s eye and gain the coveted ribbon, ihe non-prize winners of themselves have in past years provided a display that would be creditable and attractive in any district, and present promise is that this reputation will be maintained. The support given by breeders s gratifying in view of the number of important shows held about this time of the year. It is satisfactory to find that they continue to recognise that the Ashburton Show affords them a splendid opportunity of advertising 'he good •qualities of their own stock and of judging of the merits of the exhibits* penned by their friendly competitors. In the general sections the total this year is greater than was the case last year and practically the same as in 1936. Those who take special delight in the indoor sections therefore will have the privilege of inspecting large collections in their favourite classes and no doubt will be equally pleased with the quality. The annual show has its appeal for the farmer and the towndweller alike, though from different aspects. To the producer it affords opportunity for instruction and example in the matter of breeding and other branches of rural activities; it makes him aware of the progress that is being effected in his own industry. The townsman and townswoman who are interested in the serious side of the show find much food for thought on the processes that make the rural community such an important part in the national economy. Finally those who find their chief enjoyment in the fighter side of the gathering are catered for to the'full. And all must be impressed by the thought that the high place the Ashburton Show has achieved is due, so far as organisation has been a factor, to progressiveness in policy on the part of the Association, the enterprise of the officers and the unflagging industry and loyal co-operation of the staff.
