SCHOOL COMMITTEE.

ASHBURTON EAST MEETING. REDUCTION OF ONE IN STAFF. The Ashburton East School Committee nijot last- evening. The chairman (Mr W. S. Kerr) presided and others present, were Messrs W. Miller, G. Fowke, C. Dellow, G. S. Groves, and J>. McKinnon and the headmaster-(Mr S. G. Macfarlane). In consequence of the alteration in the status of the school as disclosed by the roll number on the day fixed for the annual grading of schools and by the operation of the new grading and salary scale, the services of one of the members of the staff would, have to be dispensed with at the end of the year, stated a letter from the Education Board.

In reply to an application for financial assistance, the Canterbury Education Board stated at- the present time a grant in aid of the school funds could not be made, but if a further application was submitted at the end of the current financial year, the matter would again receive attention. The headmaster reported, that the roll number was 470 and that the average attendances for the last five weeks had been 407, 390, 380 and 336 respectively. .It was decided to hold the school picnic at Tima;ru, tine chairman, secretary and headmaster to make arrangements.

5 Mr Fowke, for the visiting committee, reported having visited the school and found everything in good order. He recommended sowing in grass in the newly levelled ground. The recommendation was agreed to. Mr H. Money was appointed to represent the school on the Ashburton East Memorial -Hall ’Committee.
